Kia ZERO!
I’m Mariko — a permaculturalist sharing my journey of “Playing, Living, Working, and Learning” here in New Zealand.
I’d like to introduce you to a Japanese invention called Kiero — a food waste decomposer that uses the power of microorganisms to naturally break down scraps. It’s perfect for people who don’t have a garden but still want to live more sustainably and reduce their environmental impact.

Kia ZERO by Mariko Marshall
Creating a natural cycle
Kiero is not designed to create compost for home gardens, and its unique feature is that it does not increase the amount of soil .
- The soil does not increase
- No foul odor
- No insects breeding
- No running cost

I made compost but don’t know what to do with it…

Kiero works perfect for you!
This product completely eliminates the worry of “I made compost but don’t know what to do with it…” We would like you, who are busy with your daily life and don’t have time to garden at home, to use it.
From Kitchen Scraps to Zero Waste!
Have you ever had the experience of suddenly noticing green mold growing on cheese in the back of your refrigerator?

It’s a shame, but throw it in the trash!
It’s actually a food that microorganisms love.
Inside the Kiero bin, sunlight, water, air, and soil work together in perfect balance. By recreating this natural cycle in a compact box, the soil’s microorganisms are activated. They decompose and ferment the food we can’t eat, eventually returning it safely back to the earth.
With Kiero, we can shift from a lifestyle of throwing things away to one of giving back to nature. Our vision is to spread this circle of earth-friendly, zero-waste living here in New Zealand.
Tips for using the Kiero effectively
There are a few tips to help you get the most out of your Kiero.
for example,
・Vegetable peelings and scraps
・Leftovers
・Spoiled or moldy food
・Left over ramen soup
・Used frying oil
・Fish bones, small bones, and meat
The Kia ZERO uses the power of microorganisms to thoroughly break down these odor-causing substances.
What is difficult to decompose?
However, some take longer to decompose.
for example:
・Corn or cabbage cob
・Hard foods such as avocado seeds
・Chicken bones or large fish bones
These substances do not decompose easily and can remain for a long time, so it is best to avoid them if possible, or break them down as finely as possible before adding them.
Designed to be odorless and insect-resistant
The basics of usage are very simple.
- Dig the soil about 20cm deep.
- Add scraps. (and water if the soil is too dry.)
- Cover the top with soil firmly.
- Insert a stick to mark the area.
- Next time, dig a hole at the next spot.

By covering it with soil, odors will not occur and insects and animals will not come near it.
After a few days, the contents will disappear, as if they have disappeared into the soil.(That is actually the meaning of Kiero (disappear )
Microorganisms become less active during the cold winter months, but will resume activity in the spring.
